Canada Carney Backs Trump Ukraine Peace Push Ahead of High-Stakes Zelenskyy Visit

Prime Minister Mark Carney praised U.S. leadership and its willingness to provide "security guarantees" for Ukraine, as European allies watch cautiously ahead of a critical Trump-Zelenskyy meeting in Washington.

In a significant show of transatlantic solidarity, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Saturday publicly endorsed President Donald Trump’s diplomatic efforts to end the war in Ukraine. Carney lauded the U.S. president’s leadership and specifically welcomed Washington’s commitment to ensuring Ukraine’s long-term security once a peace agreement is reached.

In a formal statement, Carney emphasized the central role of the United States in the ongoing negotiations.

“The leadership of President Trump and the United States is creating the opportunity to end Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine. Robust and credible security guarantees are essential to any just and lasting peace,” Carney wrote. “I welcome the openness of the United States to providing security guarantees as part of the Coalition of the Willing’s efforts.”

The statement aligns Canada with a growing number of Western nations supporting a U.S.-led path toward a resolution. The “Coalition of the Willing” mentioned by Carney refers to an informal alliance of nations, including Canada, the UK, and France, that have convened to coordinate post-war military and security support for Ukraine.

This coalition is scheduled to hold a virtual meeting on Sunday, which will be spearheaded by French President Emmanuel Macron and U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, underscoring the high level of international coordination.

“Canada is closely co-ordinating with President Zelenskyy and our partners in the Coalition of the Willing to intensify our steadfast support for Ukraine and our shared commitment to its peace and security,” Carney’s statement added.

A Flurry of Diplomatic Activity

Prime Minister Carney’s endorsement follows a pivotal week of high-stakes diplomacy. The announcement comes just a day after President Trump held direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. While those discussions concluded without a definitive deal, they appear to have set the stage for the next phase of negotiations.

In response to the Trump-Putin meeting, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he will travel to Washington for a crucial meeting with President Trump on Monday to discuss the path forward.

However, despite the public displays of support, European partners remain cautious. According to a previous report from POLITICO, there is concern among allies that President Trump may not extend the same “hospitality” to President Zelenskyy as he did to President Putin.

To ensure Ukrainian interests are strongly represented, at least one other senior European leader is expected to travel with Zelenskyy to Washington. This individual, likely to be Finnish President Alexander Stubb or NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, will reportedly act as an “advocate—or buffer” for the Ukrainian leader during the sensitive talks.

The coming days are set to be a critical test of Western unity and President Trump’s diplomatic strategy, as the world watches to see if these efforts can forge a just and lasting peace for Ukraine.
